Cub Camp Fun: It's Sam's First Year!

So it finally occurred to me tonight that I have posted all of my Cub Scout Day Camp pictures in the private FB group, so nobody near and dear to us has seen very many of the pictures. Voila! Here they are.

Rex taught him to shoot BBs. Looks like they were pretty successful!

This was a fun game that involved lots of water.

And they made Earth Slime, which apparently was great fun to put on your head and face whilst still in its bag...I suppose that's probably a good thing.

Shooting went well, too. He had a great teacher (one of the other boys' dads, who was with us for the day).

Poor Sam! He hit one of the target balloons, but there wasn't quite enough oomph! behind it, so the arrow bounced off of the balloon instead of popping it. He is anxious to try again though!

This is me being corrected very rightfully by a Boy Scout about a third of my age for not keeping my bow aimed down range. Oops.
Our big girl is in the Siblings Den, and gets to do all the things the Cub Scouts do. But she stops to visit with me and hug me every now and again.

She's beautiful. P.S. Boomer Sooner!

Cock-a-Doodle-Doo

Today's post wouldn't be complete without mentioning the rooster. The one that stowed away aboard a landscaping trailer and hopped off in our neighborhood. His people wanted him back, and eventually he showed up. There were several neighbor families chasing that baby around. Rex is pretty good at it. No surprises there. Yeah that was our adventure for the day.

In the mean time, here is the story of Madeline's life these days.

Don't ask. I seriously have no idea what game they are playing that involves Rex conquering the littles. But I'm not really surprised.

But all is well when biggest brother comes home to play.

(Ernestine the spider was my new friend from Cub Scout pack meeting last night.)

My Heart Melted a Little

We had a really busy day because I brilliantly scheduled a doctor's appointment on the same day I had a pack meeting for Cub Scouts. The pack meeting went really well.

So did the doctor's appointment. On the way home, I shared my Reese's peanut butter cups with Rex (I know! that's true love, right?). And--this is the part where my heart got a little melted--he, unasked, shared his peanut butter cup with Madeline. That always makes me smile, when they do something super nice for a sibling of their own free will.

He makes my heart smile.

The Rememberer

Today, Sam and I went on a little adventure. I am preparing for an upcoming Cub Scout day camp event where we will be geocaching. Having never geocached before, I thought maybe I should practice, plus I needed to scope out our event site. We headed out to Chattahoochee Bend State Park, which is only a few miles from our home.

After much technological tinkering, we chose a goal cache, and we set off down one of the trails. Not the trail Sam would have picked, because he wanted a different color trail marker, but down it we went nonetheless.

On this first part of our hike, Sam decided that he would be the leader. This was my view for at least a half mile.

It took some time to find our intended geocache. It was farther off the trail than I anticipated, and in the interim before discovery, I had to address a six-year-old's concerns about being lost. I kept telling him that I knew the way back, and that in case I didn't, I was holding a GPS and a compass in my hands. But once our mission was accomplished, it was all good.

It's a good thing that Sam was all about the find, because the "treasure" was a little lame. I will be hiking this geocache again before Monday to ensure that the "treasure" is somewhat motivating for 10 year old boys.

And then we hiked back. We liked the Chattahoochee river, so we stopped for a selfie.

It was then that Sam decided that I should definitely be the leader, because I was "the rememberer." I sort of snorted because remembering hasn't been one of my strengths lately, and I hear it only goes downhill from here. So for the rest of the hike, he told me that I would be the rememberer until I got old and then he would have to do it. I love that kid!

It was a great adventure, and I loved having one-on-one time with my youngest son!

Bobcat!

Caleb received his Cub Scout Bobcat award this week.  Even though he did all the work for it last March, I am a bad mom and failed to take care of things until this March.  Next month, he will receive his Wolf award, and then he'll be a Bear!  Whoa, time flies.  In the mean time, Mom got to paint his face, and he got to "pin me."  It was lots of fun, and I'm really proud of all the hard work he's put in to get things done!
